Wayne Long Obituary

Wayne M. Long  passed away due to declining health on October 1, 2021. He was the son of Ayden and Leah Long of Syracuse, NY born March 2, 1927.

Wayne is survived by sister Bonita Brown of Fl; Arlene Lyman a sister in-law;  and three sons and their spouses, Terry and Bev, Dean and Luanne, and Brian and Diane. He was the uncle to several nieces and nephews that all were enriched by Wayne.    There are many grandchildren Jennie, Sandy, Jack, Mike, Matt and great-grandchildren, Zach, Trevor, Xavier, Dylan, Ben, Jon, Leah, TJ, Abbey, and Waylon; they will all miss Pop, He is predeceased by his wife Edith (Waite), who passed in 2003, they were married for 56 year;  grandson Patrick Long in 2015; brother Robert Long in 2011; and close friend of recent years, Shirley Shestak.

Wayne was a veteran of WW II  and the Korea War serving the USN as a Fire Control Specialist 2nd Class Petty Officer on the Los Angles heavy cruiser and New Jersey battleship. He and his crewmates aimed the big guns, any officer could pull the trigger.

Wayne was employed by Syracuse China for 47 years, starting as a Liner, then working in the laboratory, and finally as a Supervisor on various productions lines. After retirement, Wayne worked at Vollmer and CJ Greenhouse’s.

Wayne was generous with his time assisting family and friends with the construction of their homes. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and hunting. Wayne was an adult leader in the Boy Scout program for 50 years, starting with Cub Pack #724 in Central Square, establishing Pack #735 in West Monroe, then working West Monroe Scout Troop #735. Over the years he held many leadership positions leading training programs, organizing events in the Hiawatha and Longhouse Council serving the region. He received the Silver Beaver, the highest award given to volunteers by a Council. He was  recognized for his service to the Scouting Program by the VFW, Masons and was Northshore Citizen of the Year.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Wayne’s name with be greatly appreciated to the West Monroe  Historical Society, Longhouse Council BSA 2803 Brewerton Road Syracuse NY 13211 restricted endowment or campership funds ( these funds are protected from use to settle court claims and Wayne deeply believed in the program), or West Monroe Fire Department Auxiiliary.

Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, from 11 am to 1 pm, at Traub Funeral Home in Central Square followed by a Funeral Service at 1 pm. Burial will take place in West Monroe Cemetery in West Monroe.
