Thomas Weatherup Obituary

Thomas S. “Tom” Weatherup, 91, lifelong resident of Central Square passed away peacefully on February 24th.   Tom was born on the day of the great stock market crash of October 29, 1929 to the late David and Joy Stephenson Weatherup.  He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years Charlotte Simon, son Thomas Jr, and sister Helen Walther. Tom is survived by his sons James (Kathleen) and Andrew (Mary Kay) both of Central Square and daughter Susan (James) Farrell of Binghamton; also survived by his devoted partner of 18 years, Joyce Cornell Murphy; daughter-in-law Dr. Leslee Boissy (Dr. Charles Laman);  9 grandchildren, Thomas (Rachel), Erin (William) Bicknell, Sean (Brooke), Ryan,  Patrick (Kathryn), Michael (Rachel), Dylan Walter; Daniel Farrell, Kelly Farrell; 8 great-grandchildren, Mia, Kacy, Colin, Darragh, Kieran, Oakleigh, Kinleigh, Cora.  He is also survived by his brother David (Christina), brother-in-law Richard Walther, and several nieces and cousins.  “Dad”, “Grandpa”, “Papa”, “Big Papa”, “Tom”, “Tommy”, “OTW” will be deeply missed by all.

Tom was a graduate of Central Square High School, attended Clarkson University and served in the US Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) stationed in Port Hueneme, CA. Tom was an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word and had many accomplishments in his life that he brought to Central Square and the surrounding community for nearly seventy years.  He developed high quality residential housing communities including North Country Heights, Irish Hills, Green Acres Apartments, Country Garden Apartments, and Senior Living Community Summerhill Village.  At age 88, he started new tract Watertower Landing with 19 lots and was still involved on a daily basis with the third phase now opening.  He built and operated several commercial businesses including Green Acres Lanes and Tennis Center, Green Acres Roller Rink, Fridays Fish, Sundaes Best Ice Cream Stand, Pat & Mike’s Car Wash.  He attracted many prominent businesses to the area including FasTrac, McDonald’s, Fulton Savings Bank, Pathfinder Bank, Dunkin’ Donuts, RiteAid (now Walgreens).  Tom also brought medical services to the community by developing and donating property to the Central Square Health Center and the Southern Oswego County Ambulance services.  He proudly served his community as past Town of Hastings Supervisor as well as Assessor, a member of the Central Square Lions Club, Central Square Masons, Oswego County Grange and the Citizens Advisory Board for Oswego County Solid Waste.

Tom’s greatest joy came from his family.   He loved all of his family equally and was proud of every one of them.  We went on many family vacations over the years including Toronto, Quebec, Niagara on the Lake, Baltimore, Cleveland, Atlantic City, New Orleans, New Smyrna, Myrtle Beach, taking in events such as baseball games, hockey games, plays, and dinners.  Mom and Dad had several boats that we enjoyed on Oneida Lake, Lake Ontario, the Rideau Canal and other waterways.  Dad purchased an RV and was happiest when the kids or grandkids used it to travel to Florida, a car race, camping, a college parent’s weekend.

The family would like to thank Joyce for her loving companionship and care of our Dad, especially when he lost his vision two years ago. Also to Patti who was kind and caring and there for Dad.

A graveside service will be held at Hillside Memorial Cemetery in Central Square on July 17, 2021.  Services will begin at 12PM with a celebration of life following at 916 Riverside in Brewerton.
