Kenneth House Obituary

Kenneth Harold House, 94, of Hastings, formerly of Mallory, began his life on May 12, 1926 and it came to an end on July 5, 2020.

Born to Harold and Keitha (Hoyt) House, Kenneth graduated from Central Square High School in 1943 where he was voted hardest worker by his classmates. Kenneth worked the family farm on Baum Road in Mallory, until he moved to Hastings in 1946 where he maintained his own farm, lived, labored, and enjoyed the rest of his life.

Kenneth is an eighth generation male descendant of our Dutch family that settled in the fertile valley of New Amsterdam circa 1685. Kenneth started his farm on Pangborn Road in Hastings while working as a clerk in Central Square at the Low’s Cash Store that was established in 1896 by A.T. Low. Then moving under the direction of Mr. George Mounty and Mr. Clyde Devendorf as a grocery and dry goods store, Ken worked at his clerk position for 14 years from 1946 to 1960. During the year of 1960, Kenneth purchased Low’s Cash Store and ran the grocery business nearly ten years until selling the building and moving his grocery business to Caughdenoy and opening “House’s Market.” Kenneth later sold his market after his wife suffered a serious illness and went to work as a meat cutter for Eddie’s Big M in Mexico, Geiss’ Big M in Brewerton, Smith’s Market in Brewerton, and finally the IGA in Central Square before retiring at age 77 in 2003.

Ken was able to enjoy his years during retirement by traveling to destinations inside and outside of the USA and remained active on his farm. Kenneth was a member of the Old Tyme Fiddlers Association, Future Farmers of America, and The First Baptist Church of Central Square.

Kenneth was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Richeard; second wife, Shirley Jean Lamson; his sister, Erma Wright; his sons, Duane P. House and Leslie Edward House.

He is survived by his sisters, Bernice English and Helen Lamson; two daughters, Brenda (Dave) Menear, Denise (Rick) Miller; three sons, Mark House, Matthew (Susan) House, and Merrill (Cherie) House. He is also survived by grandsons, Joshua, Jacob, Jeromey, and Garrett House; granddaughters, Deona, Megan, Courtney, Bobbi, Cheryl, and Gabrielle; great grandchildren, Ellie, Miri and Ethan.
