Peter Schauer, 86, of Central Square, passed away on Thursday at Crouse Hospital. In his last days he was surrounded by his family.
Peter was born on March 14, 1932 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Syracuse. In 1946, the Schauer family moved from Knaul Street on the northside to a dairy farm on Chesbro road in Caughdenoy. He and his three brothers worked hard on the farm. In 1954, Peter was drafted into the Army. He begrudgedly left his father and young brother Raymond to work the farm. Fortunately, Peter did well in the service and was stationed in Germany where he was able to visit many of his relatives living there. Peter came home to the farm and rejoined his family. He had a great sense of how mechanical things worked and kept old and worn out equipment running on the farm. He got a job at J & J Feed Mill, grinding corn and grains into feed and kept that worn out equipment running, as well. In 2002, they had to give up milking cows, but Peter kept working at the mill for several more years. He lived his last years where he wanted, at the old farmhouse with his dog, Buster. The home wasn’t full of wonderful cooking smells or the chatter from a mob of kids like it once was. His nieces, nephews and family stopped in to keep him company. Nephew, Dale Schauer, was especially attentive to Peter’s needs. I’m sure Dale received some rough words at times from a Peter that was usually kind and gentle. We know that he loved us all and will be loved and missed always.
He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Maria Schauer; brothers, Joseph, Lorenz and Raymond Schauer; sisters, Elizabeth Lewandowski and Marianne Chesbro.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Pardee, and Raymond’s wife, Heidi Schauer, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 12 at Traub Funeral Home, Central Square from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, with a memorial service immediately following.
